Ayrton Senna: Three Time World Champion

Ayrton Senna is considered by his peers to be the greatest Formula One driver of all time. In a poll of over 200 current and former Formula One competitors conducted by Autosport Magazine, Senna was chosen as the best of the best. His driving style was smooth and precise and he excelled in both dry and wet conditions.

The Brazilian was a three-time Formula One World Champion, British Formula 3 Champion, British Formula Ford 2000 Champions, European Formula Ford 2000 Champion, South American Kart Champion, and was the runner-up two years in a row at the Karting World Championships.

In Formula One, Senna drove for Toleman, Lotus, McLaren, and Williams. He won three World Championships while at McLaren, and then moved to Williams where he passed away at the young age of 34 in a violent single car incident at the San Marino Grand Prix at Imola.

His final race was marred by tragedy as his protege Rubens Barrichello was seriously injured in a qualifying accident, and Austrian driver Roland Ratzenberger was killed in a separate qualifying incident.

Senna was a national hero in his home country, and the government of Brazil held three days of mourning where an estimated three million people lined the streets to celebrate his illustrious career.
